The ocean. As seen from the perspective of Taiwanese fishermen and fisherwomen, and, also, from the perspective of the fish.
There’s much wisdom contained within the fishing aphorisms Laura Pop has searched for in Taiwan and then anthologized in this film. The superstitious spectator will call them ecological epiphanies. The wary one will see in them irrational and poetic ways of resisting the urban alienation of the 21st century. All will recognize their beauty. And no matter how spiritual, the film is based on a fact: the underwater has remained, to a great extent, an image forbidden to culture by nature. Thus, the “surface” documentary sequences from the Taiwanese ports and boats, themselves blurred as document-images, dimmed on the lyrical Super 8mm, allow themselves to be completed by the speculative animation of the below.
